Mission

Friends of Five Creeks believes that the health of creeks and watersheds supports the health of urban environments.

What We Do

We mobilize volunteers of all ages to restore, maintain, understand, and enjoy the creeks and watersheds of the East Bay from Berkeley to Richmond. We help to revitalize creeks, improve habitat and water quality, eliminate invasive plant species. In hands-on year-round efforts with individual volunteers and groups, we prune, weed, dig, plant, remove trash, and build and maintain paths.

We also help with and advocate for projects that restore and revitalize urban nature, including the effects of climate change. We strive to increase stewardship and public understanding of environmental processes.

Over the years, have carried out a wide variety of programs and events. These include publishing and posting information, designing and installing interpretive signs and displays, leading walks, hosting speakers, and increasingly, citizen science and training interns with a focus on fostering future environmental careers.

In efforts within our mission, we collaborate with and support local government agencies and like-minded civic groups. We work with government staff, write letters, and speak at public meetings, focusing on areas where we have detailed local knowledge, and taking a long-term view, recognizing uncertainty and differing views.
